Oh, How I Do Love to Grocery Shop :)

Posted in Lunch at 10:33 am by jaweber

ah, I love Whole Foods! Seriously I just love shopping there; it makes me so happy for some reason and I have done some tests and determined I really don’t spend any more money shopping there as opposed to a regular grocery store because I usually by the 365 brand items, which are much less expensive than other things. Also, planning out what you are going to buy then sticking to the list cuts down on cost as well because you are prepared and know your limit! While I was shopping I stopped at the little cafe and got a 12 ounce skim milk latte with peppermint syrup in it to sip on. Yum!

For lunch today I reheated a bowl of the greek white bean soup I made last week. I also had a cut up apple, Stacey’s whole wheat bagel chips and 3 ounces of sliced bell peppers (not pictured, I decided to have this after I started to eat!). Plus, a tiny piece of dark chocolate :). It hit the spot and now I’m back to work on tons of recipes I have to copy for tomorrow before I head downtown for a yoga class at 2:00. I’m so excited about the dinner I have planned tonight! Hopefully it won’t disappoint! cimg0439.jpg

My pretty pink grocery bag that I had to get in France because there they charge you if you want to use their grocery bags! Awesome! I think the U.S. should do this too because then more people would be forced to help the environment by not wasting so many plastic grocery bags. Piling all my groceries in this one big bag is so much easier than lugging 6 grocery bags up the stairs to my apartment anyways 🙂

Yummy! That soup looks delicious, I cannot wait to try it! Btw, I’m going to an Italian restaurant tonight with family, do you have any suggestions of healthier meal choices? Thanks!
P.S. I ❤ Grocery Shopping too! It’s one of my favorite parts of my week at school!

    Danielle,

Can I come too?? I love Italian! MMmm pizza is my favorite….from a really good italian restaurant it’s amazing! If you are looking for lighter entrees try ordering a non-pasta dish…or a seafood dish. Most italian restaurants have seafood and I have found thats a pretty safe way to go. I don’t order pasta much at out just because the portion sizes are always enormous but if you feel like pasta you might want to ask if they can give you a half order. Some places do and its worth a try. Just stay clear of heavy cream sauces. People always associate Italian food as being so unhealthy but if you don’t order the pasta + alfredo sauce it’s really not that bad! Give yourself a limit for the bread, enjoy a nice dinner and have a great time.

Hey! Hope you are having a great weekend!! Just wondering do you live alone or with roommates? I live in a single apartment and love to cook…but it’s hard to make single portions so I always have leftovers for the next day! Just wanted to know what you did! Also, how often do you exercise? and is there a certain time you don’t like to eat after at night? thanks!!

    hey Melissa,

I live with my best friend but unfortunately she went home for christmas last week and won’t be back til new years so right now it’s just me! Last year when I was in college I lived with 2 of my girlfriends but I was the only one that really cooked. All of the recipes that I post on here are single portions because I’m cooking just for myself. Whenever I make something like a soup, stew or casserole though I’ll just go ahead and make the entire thing, freeze half and eat the other half for a couple days! Depending on what you are making you can leave it in the fridge for a few days, no problem. Just don’t forget about it!

I exercise about 6 times a week…I WAS training for my first half-marathon in feb. but I think I’ve overstressed something in my leg so I’m giving it a couple weeks off then seeing where I am after that. Usually my workout schedule is as follows:
    Sunday-yoga
Monday- 40 min. run or 30 min. on elliptical machine at gym
    Tuesday-yoga
    Wednesday- same as monday
    Thursday- Strength training at gym
Friday- it depends…sometimes running or sometimes just a walk.
Saturday- if I ran on friday I’ll take sat. off but I had been doing a longer run on saturday mornings…

It varies though! this week one of my best friends is coming to visit on thursday so I wont work out that day…yoga is my favorite workout…I really don’t see the need to kill myself at the gym when yoga just feels so much better!

There’s really not a certain time I stop eating at night…I used to try not to eat after 8 but I work about 3-4 nights a week and have a snack around 8:15 on those nights. I would say its probably best not to eat later than maybe 10:00…of course late night binging on crackers and cookies is never a good thing. I like to eat an early dinner around 6:00 when I’m here on my own and then I’ll have dessert/snack around 7:30 and then nothing else. When I’m with my boyfriend though we eat a later dinner around 7:30 or 8…so it just varies!

    Hope that helps!

I just discovered soba noodles recently while taking Food Science Lab in school and I absolulty love them! I have been making them in a red sauce with variety of veggies (spinach, zuccini, muschrooms, broccoli,) with goat cheese and eaither chicken or Boca crumbles. If you have any other recipes I would love to have them!
Also when you are portioning out your 2oz how do you measure, I have a scale but it is not the best one.

    Christie,

I have another favorite soba noodle recipe that I would be more than willing to share! But right now, its 10:30 and I have to be up at 6 for school I’ll have to get to that tomorrow…I’ll post it for you tomorrow night. It’s so good and involved peanut butter…your combination of chicken/veggies/cheese sounds good too-now that I have some in the house I might have to try that. I love the nutty taste of the noodles!

As for the food scale..I finally caved and spent the 60 dollars at william sonoma to get a really nice salter digital one. I LOVE it. totally a worth-it purchase because pasta is so difficult to measure and before I would just eyeball it but I like to be exact! You just lay it out dry on the scale and that’s that. It saves a lot of dirty measuring cups, that’s for sure!

Hope that helps–I’ll get you the noodle recipe sometime tomorrow!

Thanks in advanced, and maybe after the holidays I will splurge to get that scale

    Christie-

Here’s a link to that recipe I was telling you about..peanut sesame noodles. The recipe doesn’t call for specifically soba noodles but that’s how I’ve always made it…it’s soooo good and a standby in my kitchen for sure! I just whip up the sauce in the blender and then usually add some cut up bell peppers and green onions. It would be good with chicken or tofu also but I’ve never tried it. I could eat the sauce with a spoon!

you should def. get the scale if you can..makes all the difference in the world if you are interested in exact portion sizes!
