Breakfast: It’s Always Good To Be Prepared!

Good Morning!

I slept in this morning till 8, which is late for me- I’m a huge morning person! Then, I made a quick breakfast of Quick Cooking Irish Oats made with 1/2 skim, 1/2 water, 8 almonds and 1 banana. I ate half of a huge navel orange with it and saved the other half for a snack! I keep a little stock of healthy breakfast items at Ryan’s house so when I get to come home I don’t have to rely on stale cereal and toast as my breakfast!  That’s a good trick to follow; if you know you are going out of town or have somewhere else that you sleep sometimes, keep a breakfast stock with you! Toss a packet of quick cooking oats in your purse along with a piece of fruit and you have almost a ready made meal. For about 390 calories I feel satisfied…my favorite little coffee shop though is right around the corner here so there might be a stop there later on….. 😉

    Have a good day! Congrats on being in control last night! I have to admit, I’m kind of nervous that I’m home until January and have so many goodies constantly stocked in the kitchen , not to mention all the holiday parties! I finally got back down to a healthy weight that I was comfortable with this past semester and I’m afraid to gain some back now that I’m not the only one serving myself food. Any tips?!

    I would have to say that this time of the year is a big struggle, but when going to parties NEVER go hungry and I always find i do so much better when i got into a situation with a game plan and tell myself I AM NOT going to over eat or eat just to eat, I can have what I truly want in moderation, and try to always keep a drink in your hand of water or diet coke or I will mix a little wine with something liek fresca so I have a drink but very low in calores, I also bring gum along!
    You def. dont want to deprive yourself b/c that will only lead to binge eating so just always have a game plan

    I found your blog through Kath’s site and just wanted to let you know that I like it and will be coming back! These food blogs are so addicting…
    Also, it’s really inspiring to see that you’re going to school for something completely different than what you originally majored in…I’m a college junior and definitely feeling the stress of trying to figure out what the heck I want to do with the rest of my life.

    I feel exactly the same way! I am about to head home for the break and am worried because I won’t be on a schedule for a month, leaving lots of time for snacking!

    I too have struggled with coming home for the holidays and eating, eating, eating! The number one thing though, like Christie said, is to NEVER deprive yourself! If you are at a party and there’s some amazing-looking homemade dessert or cookies that make your mouth water just looking at them….HAVE ONE! Enjoy every single last crumb! Then…move on! Don’t feel guilty and don’t overthink it. You aren’t going to gain 10 pounds by enjoying a couple cookies or a glass of wine! It’s the holidays after all. I think if you are worried about overeating at parties though its a good idea to make sure you eat a healthy small meal before you go. Last year I had a bunch of engagement parties to go to and I knew there would only be unhealthy things/drinks there so I would make myself a gardenburger before I left the house and then I would enjoy some veggies/crackers or something there along with a glass of wine. Set a goal for yourself before you go to these things like “i will only have 2 drinks” or “I will only have 2 small cookies” and then stick to it! Hold yourself accountable!

    As for being at home for break, I would def. go grocery shopping and stock your parent’s house full of healthy food if it isnt already so you have nutritious snack options available. My mom is a pretty healthy cook so I never worry about that but maybe you could offer to cook a little while you are at home too? That way you know what is going into your body!

    Thanks, Rachel!
    I try to merge the two interests of mine together (writing + cooking) because I do want to eventually be a food writer! I stand alone though at school where I am the only one that doesn’t want to be a restaurant chef! I look at it all as experiences I can write about later on!

    Oh, and look for yummy and healthy cookie recipes on cookinglight.com. that’s where I get most of mine and they are delicious (and the recipe gives a calorie count per cookie if you are worried about overeating!)
